On the face of the medal is the image of Saint Benedict. In his right hand he holds the cross, the Christian's symbol of salvation. The cross reminds us of the zealous work of evangelizing and civilizing England and Europe carried out mainly by the Benedictine monks and nuns, especially for the sixth to the ninth/tenth centuries. In St. Benedict's left hand is his Rule for Monasteries.
On a pedestal to the right of St. Benedict is the poisoned cup, shattered when he made the sign of the cross over it. On a pedestal to the left is a raven about to carry away a loaf of poisoned bread that a jealous enemy had sent to St. Benedict.
.

On the back, the medal offers a certain number of letters of which each one represents a Latin word :

  • In the four corners of the cross one can read: C S P B (Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti) which means "The Cross of the Holy Father Benedict".

  • The letters on the perpendicular line of the Cross read CSSML (Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux) which means: "May the Holy Cross be my light" read CSSML (Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux) which means: "May the Holy Cross be my light".

  • The letters on the horizontal line of the Cross read NDSMD (Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux) which means: "May the devil never be my leader".
    .

  • On the circle around the cross can be read: PAX, the Latin word for "Peace" which is the Benedictine motto.

  • .

The medal of Saint Benedict is not a talisman, but when used with faith and prayer it is a powerful means of warding off the enemy of our salvation, the devil, and of obtaining from the Good Lord the all-important grace of a holy and happy death.
