Description Icon of the Annunciation of Ohrid
Reproduced many times, this icon, the most celebrated of the museum of Ohrid, has been the object of numerous scientific studies. The dominant character is that of the Archangel Gabriel who appears in all his splendor, in the foreground, as a young Greek, a portrait of formal beauty and boldness rarely seen to this degree in the painting of icons.
The Virgin Mary, seated at the right under a canopy, is dressed in a purple maphorion (a large veil), a dark green dress and red shoes. Her look contrasts with that of the Angel; it wonderfully translates what Saint Luke reports of the response that Mary gave to the greeting of the Angel:
"Behold the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me according to Your will"
The icon is presently in Ohrid in the art gallery onf the Church of Saint Clement.
