The Holy Virgin appeared to Saint Bernadette Soubirous in 1858 in Massabielle in a cave located in a meander of the Gave River. She presented herself in the girl's language:
« Que soy immaculada conceptiou » that is: I am the Immaculate Conception, a title that had just been defined by Pius IX four years ago and which means that Mary was preserved from the stain of original sin from the first moment of its existence. This privilege was granted to us in favor of divine maternity. It is indeed through Mary that we have received Jesus Christ the Savior of our souls.
Mary appeared dressed in white and surrounded by a blue ribbon, which was the clothing of the members of the local congregation of the children of Mary who gathered the young pious girls from the neighborhood. She carries a rosary in her hand to urge us to recite this beautiful meditative prayer that puts us in touch with the mysteries of the life of Christ through the intercession of her Blessed Mother.
The message of Lourdes is an invitation to prayer and penance, that is, to return to God by confessing sins and observing the 10 commandments. To attest to her divine mission, Our Lady of Lourdes predicted the erection of a basilica in this wild and eccentric place, as well as the miraculous healing of many patients. These prophecies have been realized punctually, and the office of medical findings still records many miracles authenticated today with great professionalism. The pilgrimage to the basilica and the Grotto of Massabielle drains countless crowds.
