Even if on this religious icon we find the essential elements of the representation of Jesus Mercy that the Savior had shown in 1931 to Saint Sister Faustina Kowalska, we can wonder to what extent such an icon can be a source of grace according to the promises of our Lord Jesus.
To answer this question, it is good to remember that the best known picture of Jesus Mercy which has contributed the most to make known this devotion and consequently was source of many graces, is the one that is currently in Krakow. It was realized in 1943 whereas the saint was already in the eternity since 5 years; the artist followed his inspiration without really taking into account the first painting made in 1934 and found in Vilnius. However, this did not prevent the spread of devotion to the Divine Mercy, because thanks to this picture, this devotion spread throughout the world, indeed the picture of Vilnius was little known because of communist persecutions, and it must have been hiding for a while.
This reminder shows us that we can be openminded (not so that our brain fall out, however!) and that, to the extent that the essential is there, grace can also act through second hand's items. Moreover, Christ himself had told Sister Faustina not to worry that the painting was not as beautiful as what she had seen in vision, because "It is neither in the beauty of colors, nor in that of the brushstroke that the grandeur of this painting resides, but in My grace ".
